Understanding the Trinity involves comprehending how God exists as three distinct persons – the Father, the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit – yet is one being. This concept is unique and can be challenging to fully grasp, as it goes beyond everyday logic and experience.
The Bible, while never using the term “Trinity,” provides insights into this complex relationship. The essence of the Trinity can be seen by considering key scriptures:
- Matthew 28.19 – This verse instructs believers to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This indicates unity in the Godhead.
- 2 Corinthians 13.14 – Here, the grace of Jesus, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit are all mentioned together. Here we find a coexistence and co-operation within the Trinity.
- John 1.1, 14 – These verses speak of Jesus (the Word) as both with God and being God. They show his divine nature and oneness with the Father.
- John 10.30 – Jesus states, “I and the Father are one”. It emphasizes the unity of nature and essence between Jesus and God the Father.
- John 14.16-17 – Jesus speaks of sending another advocate (the Holy Spirit), who will dwell with and be in believers. Again, we see the distinct personhood of the Holy Spirit, yet in unity with Jesus and the Father.
- John 14.26 – This verse refers to the Holy Spirit as the Helper who will teach and remind believers of Jesus’ teachings. Another instance demonstrating the cooperative role of the Holy Spirit in the Godhead.
Understanding Darkly
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known (1 Corinthians 13.12). Paul reminds us that we shouldn’t be discouraged when we encounter difficult concepts in the Bible. Understanding the Trinity is one of those concepts. The Trinity is not three gods, but one God in three persons, each person being fully God. This understanding helps maintain the balance of recognizing the distinctness of each person while affirming their unity in the one Godhead.
