What is the Holy Spirit?

True Christians experience the Holy Spirit of God, often before they understand much about it. Here are just a few of the Bible’s descriptions of what it is:

  • The Comforter (John 14.26)
  • Oil (Matthew 25.1-4)
  • Treasure in earthen vessels (2 Corinthians 4.7))
  • A still, small voice (1 Kings 19.12)
  • Christ in you: The Hope of Glory (Colossians 1.27)
  • The source of (Godly attributes) fruit (Galatians 5.22-23)
  • A source of (God’s ministry) gifts

Holy Spirit Ministry

God’s spirit indwells all Christians to enable the work of the Kingdom through our natural attributes. For example, we can sing without the Holy Spirit’s help, but when singing worship songs “in the spirit”, or in faith that his spirit is singing through us, the results are often amazing – both to you the singer, and to the audience. Your words will affect them in ways that worldly musicians can’t begin to – i.e. the Holy Spirit in you resonates in the hearts of the listeners, and those who are listening for it will know that they’re hearing from God through your singing. A normal singer sings songs that are heard with the ears, understood with the brain, and felt in the heart. When a Christian sings “in the spirit” all of those things happen, but the listener’s SPIRIT also responds. “There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the almighty gives understanding”.

The same applies to other ministries as well. When preaching or even when talking with another individual, ask God to speak through you, and let him guide your every word in faith. This is sometimes called “the ministry of the word (of God)”. Craftsmen and others who work with their hands also experience his presence and help, especially when the work is aligned with God’s will and purposes.
